  1.    The two types of nucleic acid,
  2. deoxyribonucleic acid and ribonucleic
  3. acid, are composed of building-block 
  4. molecules called nucleotides.  Each 
  5. nucleotide contains a phosphate 
  6. group and a nitrogenous base both 
  7. covalently bonded to a five-carbon 
  8. sugar.  Deoxyribonucleic acid 
  9. (DNA) has four types of nucleotides, 
  10. each with deoxyribose as its sugar but 
  11. with a different nitrogenous base. The 
  12. purine bases adenine and guanine 
  13. have double-ring structures; the 
  14. pyrimidine bases cytosine and thymine 
  15. have single-ring structures.  
  16. Linked by bonds that form between the
  17. phosphate group and sugar of successive 
  18. nucleotides, nucleotides are arranged in 
  19. long chains with their nitrogenous bases 
  20. oriented as side groups off the main chain.
